Archispirostreptus gigas commonly known as Giant African millipedes are the largest living species of millipede maxing out at 4 to 14 inches in length. These gentle giants make amazing pets and are content to be handled gently and allowed to explore with minimal interference or startling movements. They enjoy a varied diet of fruits, vegetables, and decaying wood preferring softer foods like bananas, tomatoes, and baby greens. Their first line of defense is to curl up in a tight ball guarded by their durable exoskeleton. When provoked further they secrete a foul tasting irritating liquid called repugnatorial fluid to deter potential predators. They require deep substrate with plenty of opportunities to burrow prioritizing floor space over height.
